Cataract & Vision Correction

Cataracts are a natural part of aging, but the good news is they are highly treatable! A cataract occurs when the eye's clear lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision, glare sensitivity, and difficulty with night driving. While this can be frustrating, modern cataract surgery offers a safe, quick, and life-changing solution!

During surgery the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL), often reducing your need for glasses. Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two, with vision continuing to sharpen over the following weeks.

YAG Laser Posterior Capsulotomy

After cataract surgery, some patients develop a cloudy membrane behind the new lens implant, causing blurred vision months or even years later. This is called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and is a common, but easily treatable, condition. The great news? YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick, painless, and highly effective procedure that restores clarity in just minutes! Using a special laser, a small opening is created in the cloudy membrane, allowing light to pass through clearly again.

The treatment is carried out in the clinic in just a few minutes — no incisions and no anaesthetic injection. Vision is usually clear again the same day, and the result is permanent.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss, affecting the central part of vision needed for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. It comes in two forms: dry AMD, which progresses gradually, and wet AMD, which can cause sudden vision loss due to abnormal blood vessel growth.

Treatment depends on the type: anti-VEGF injections are highly effective for wet AMD, while lifestyle measures and supplements help slow dry AMD. Regular monitoring is the best way to protect your central vision.

Epiretinal Membrane & Macular Hole

Both conditions are treated with vitrectomy surgery, gently peeling the membrane or repairing the hole to restore the macula. Most patients notice gradual improvement in their vision over several weeks.

Ammar completed his medical degree at the University of Otago and furthered his studies to graduate with a Master of Ophthalmology. He completed his specialist ophthalmology training having worked in several centres across New Zealand.
